Michael Thompson, born in Washington State, has been one of the world’s leading fashion photographers and portraitists for two decades, renowned for the immediacy and clarity of seductive yet restrained images of celebrities and models.
Thompson developed his expertise working in his father’s portrait studio as a boy, before studying for a degree at the Brooks Institute of Photography, California. Moving to New York, he landed an assistant’s job with Irving Penn, having been appointed personally by the legendary fashion and portrait photographer on the basis of his mature portfolio.
Thompson’s approach reflects the influence of Penn, with his meticulous work ethic and crisp, direct style. He revels in the collaboration with stylists, making-up artists and subjects, drawing on travel, the old masters and modern art to create wholly engaging narratives.
His editorial and advertising work has appeared in all the major fashion and society magazines, from Allure to Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue to Vanity Fair. Similarly, Thompson’s collection of celebrity shots, featuring Cate Blanchett, Sting, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep and countless more, as seen in the likes of GQ and The New York Times Magazine, has established him as perhaps the leading portrait photographer of his generation.
